Bits & Bobs

What goes in Bits & Bobs?

Everything that isn't yarn or a pattern — and why supplies and tools behave differently.

Safety eyes, buttons, stuffing, stitch markers, zips, hooks, needles. The things you own that aren’t yarn and aren’t patterns, and that you can never remember whether you have.

Supplies and tools

When you add something you pick a category, and they’re grouped into Supplies and Tools & Equipment. The difference isn’t cosmetic:

  • Supplies get used up. Safety eyes, buttons, stuffing, stitch markers, fasteners. Using them in a project can take them off your shelf
  • Tools don’t. A 4mm hook makes a hat and is still a 4mm hook afterwards, so using one is only ever logged against the project

That single distinction is what makes the inventory trustworthy: the numbers that go down are the ones that should.

What you can record

  • Name and category — the only things really required
  • How many, with a unit: pieces, grams, pairs, sets, bags, sheets and so on
  • Size — a picker of standard sizes for hooks and needles, free text for anything else
  • Colour, brand, and a storage location — the last one is the one you’ll thank yourself for
  • Photos, one of which shows on the card
  • Notes and tags for whatever else matters

Storage location earns its keep

“12mm black safety eyes” tells you what you have. “Third drawer, small tin” tells you where it is. On a Sunday afternoon with the shops shut, the second one is the useful field.

Using something in a project

From an item, log it against a project. Supplies ask how many you used and offer Deduct from inventory; tools just record that they were involved. The full story is in Yarn and bits in a project.

An item’s page also lists Used In Projects, so you can see where those buttons went.

It’s all yours

Bits & Bobs is kept on your device and travels between your own devices. Nothing here goes to Ravelry — with one exception, which works the other way round: hooks and needles can come in from Ravelry. See Hooks and needles from Ravelry.
