Yarn & stash

Yards or metres?

Tap any length to switch — it's the most easily missed thing in the app.

Every length in Yarn Squirrel is tappable. Tap it and it shows you the other unit; tap again and it goes back.

That’s it — but almost nobody finds it without being told, so here it is.

Where it works

Everywhere a length appears: the yardage on a pattern, the length per skein in your stash, the total length of a yarn group, the yarn used in a project. If it’s a length, it converts.

Some screens carry a small note saying Tap lengths to see conversion, as a nudge.

Setting which one you see first

Your preferred unit lives in More → Settings, and everything shows in that unit by default. The tap is for the moments when you need the other one — a pattern written in yards when you think in metres, or the other way round.

The gauge follows it too

Gauge is quoted over 10 cm or over 4 inches depending on the same setting, because a gauge in the wrong units is worse than useless.

Why not just convert everything?

Because yarn labels and patterns aren’t consistent, and rounding twice loses accuracy. Yarn Squirrel keeps what Ravelry recorded — metres for a yarn sold in metres, yards for one sold in yards — and converts only for display. The number you tap through to is calculated from the original, not from a previous conversion.
