If you have six colours of the same yarn, you don’t want six near-identical cards filling your stash. Yarn Squirrel groups the colourways of one yarn together, and shows the group as a single entry you can open.
What a group gives you
- Colourways — every colour of that yarn you own, with what’s left of each
- Yarn Specifications — weight, fibre, length and grams per skein, shared by the whole group
- Care Instructions — merged from all the colourways; see Care symbols
- Notes — for the group as a whole
- In stash — the combined amount across all the colours
- Find Patterns — patterns suited to this yarn
Making it yours
Open a group and edit it to set:
- A group photo, instead of whichever colourway happened to be first
- A name of your own — leave it blank to keep the yarn’s real name
- Notes for the group, and care instructions — which are written to every colourway in it
A name of your own is handy for yarn whose official name isn’t what you call it, and for handspun or mill ends where the “real” name means nothing to you.
Adding another colour
Open the group and tap Add Colorway. Because the yarn is already described, you only enter what’s different about this ball — the colourway, the amount, where it lives. The My Yarns tab in the add sheet does the same from the other direction. See Adding yarn to your stash.
Why this matters for planning
The group tells you how much of that yarn you have in total across colours — which is the number you want for a striped blanket or a colourwork yoke, where the colours are interchangeable in quantity terms even though they aren’t in appearance.
